Microsoft has introduced a new variant to their 'Surface' lineup of professional devices offered by the manufacturer to compete with similar products offered by other manufacturers. The Surface Laptop, one of the cheaper variants of Surface devices is mainly targeted at students who mostly opt for Apple Macbooks and Google Chromebooks in general.

Microsoft's primary claim for their new Surface laptops is the educational standpoint, with their Corporate Vice President Panos Panay openly claiming that their new product on offer was a better alternative to Apple's existing MacBooks that comes with higher costs. While the new device pretty much performs like another Windows device, the fact it accepts only Store apps due to security seems a bit unreasonable.

A review from Forbes highlights as to why even college students might not actually purchase their new product due to forcing a user to stick to store apps and offering their new Windows 10 S operating system out of the box. Microsoft might be aiming to capture a bit of the academical audience but that said, their primary competitors Apple at least, freely lets their user install any certified software to be put in their laptops.

Meanwhile, a report from Cnet also accepts the fact that students or any other average users might find it difficult to go in accordance with the restrictions placed by Microsoft on their new Surface Laptops. It's true that Microsoft wants to provide a new and secure operating environment for the users but however, the aforementioned decision might not be accepted lightly by everybody who plans to buy the device.

Windows 10 S on their Surface laptops will indeed result in quicker boot times and prescreened applications for authenticity etc. Looking at the positive side, Microsoft also mentioned that users can indeed upgrade to the Windows 10 Pro operating system for free until a short period of time. The new devices announced at Tuesday's event begins at a starting price of $999 and is also lighter and slimmer than the competing devices from Apple.
