When British plumber Steve Ratcliffe was summoned to fix a clogged toilet in Wales, he received more than he bargained for. Inside the porcelain bowl, he discovered a massive, alien outgrowth that has specialists mystified. Ratcliffe stated that the customer resided on a cattle farm. Rather than depending on a municipal water supply, the residents obtained water from an underwater pump via a borehole.
The client has experienced sporadic leaking and backfilling concerns for years, which Ratcliffe attributes to the system's age and the fact that it is not connected to the sewage system. The toilet's age is unclear, but based on the general condition of the property, he estimates it's at most 10 years old, as Ratcliffe explained to Newsweek.
Photos of the alien fungi gained much attention on Reddit as Ratcliffe posted them online. According to one user, it's a weird fungus that discovered a great environment to grow dark, moist, maybe anaerobic, and a supply of food. Others speculated that it may be biofilm, a clump of microbial cells kept together by an extrinsic covering.
'Alien' Fungi Thriving in High Humid Areas
Angel Medina Vaya, a senior lecturer of applied mycology at the University of Cranfield, stated that identifying anything like this with a photograph is quite tough. Fungi thrive in areas with organic materials and high humidity. As a result, a toilet that hasn't been flushed in a long period could have been the finest option.
Fungi are remarkable organisms that can thrive in the harshest environments where no vegetation or bacteria can live, and it may look to have a pretty excellent example on the toilet, Vaya added to her statement.
