While not a true fruit, the avocado-shaped Martian rock intrigued the Perseverance rover's cameras due to its captivating form. Resembling an oval with a raised middle section, it bears a resemblance to an avocado pit within its skin. Beyond its visual appeal, this rock holds insights into the geological forces shaping Mars' dusty and windswept landscape.
The Perseverance rover captured an image of this rock on September 8 using its Mastcam-Z camera, equipped with a potent zoom lens for detailed views of distant objects.
Further details about the rock are forthcoming as NASA's rover team investigates. Yet, the SETI Institute, a non-profit seeking extraterrestrial life, recently shared via X (former Twitter) a possible reason for its unusual shape.
According to the SETI Institute, the rock is approximately 8 inches long. They humorously referred to it as a "fossilized Martian giant avocado," showcasing an intriguing example of differential erosion, a process where rocks wear away at varying rates. In the case of this Martian avocado, the inner round portion is more resistant to erosion compared to the surrounding rock.
Perseverance is presently investigating an ancient riverbed within Jezero Crater, a once water-rich area, despite its current arid and dusty condition. As the rover proceeds with its research, it provides a more comprehensive view of the terrain, uncovering numerous distinctively shaped rocks, eagerly awaiting further exploration.
