The concept of "food as medicine" generally focuses on the heightened consumption of different whole and minimally processed plant-based food products, while limiting the intake of foods that are highly processed and rich in salt, oil, and sugar.

Those who adhere to this practice are typically interested in foods that are claimed to be loaded with medicinal properties. These food items may include nuts and seeds, legumes, herbs and spices, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.

This approach generally challenges conventional medicine, which typically depends on medicinal advancements to aid with the management of disease and health through pharmaceutical drug use.

Benefits of Food as Medicine

The practice comes with certain benefits, as medical nutrition therapy is part of a practice based on evidence that uses food and diet to support disease treatment. Limitations of Food as Medicine

While the practice yields benefits, it also comes with certain constraints. For instance, the "food as medicine" approach should not serve as a stand-alone treatment for every health condition. Chronic disease development is attributed to various factors that may not be linked to diet, such as genetic risk, autoimmune conditions, and environmental toxin exposure.

Moreover, the practice is also particularly prone to being fueled by misinformation. This is especially the case when social media is involved.

Another limitation of the approach is that it is important to think about how some foods may interact with medications, which is also known as drug-nutrient interaction. This could either interrupt or boost medication effects in the body.

Overall, while the approach is supported by how diet affects general health, it should not be treated as a general cure for every condition. It should be practiced alongside the application of proper medical intervention.
