China is working on a massive AI platform called "Supermind." This platform will be able to track millions of researchers and scientists all over the world in order to get groundbreaking technologies for its military and industries.

China's Supermind AI

The platform will make use of AI for mining a dozen of the leading science and tech databases in the world. Hundreds of millions of data points make up a three-dimensional technological and scientific intelligence and information service system for supporting their nationwide efforts to strengthen the country's technology and science.

The work is funded by the state, which notes that it uses the AI platform to help search for talent for the country. It is at work in a new intelligence and information center that started last year in Shenzhen's southern technology hub. The city houses global tech brands, including Tencent, ZTE, and Huawei. Some of these brands have been sanctioned by the US government on grounds of human rights and national security.

The project has been dubbed Supermind by the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily and the AMiner university fund associated with Tsinghua University, which offers grants for it. Around $280 million has reportedly been invested into it, mostly by the Shenzhen government.

An anonymous person, who is familiar with the project, explains that they are working on a "Who's Who" database in various areas. For instance, the platform can be asked about five field experts in an area who are top talents.

The novel AI platform is the centerpiece of Shenzhen's International Science and Technology Information Center (ITIC). It will reportedly offer 300 million worldwide science and tech papers as well as 120 million patents. It will also be able to locate 130 million human talents or global scholars to scrutinize their efforts down to the deepest details in order to make use of it. The system will also undergo constant updates. While it will cover Macau and Hong Kong within its networks, only individuals with the IP address of Shenzhen will be able to use it.

A Race Towards Technological Supremacy

The project serves as a step forward in the efforts of China to win the global competition for technology with the US. Chinese leader Xi Jinping says that the country should become a great power when it comes to technology and science and that it should attain global preeminence in 2049.

According to tech experts and geopolitical analysts, winning the race towards ground-breaking technologies, including artificial intelligence and quantum computing, could shape the future global power balance.

China is not the only country that seeks to make use of novel AI tools to gather data from all over the world. Last year, Randy Nixon, who heads the Central Intelligence Agency of the US, shared that the CIA was working on an AI-based tool that comes as part of wider efforts to get more open-source data, including scientific and technological information.
