
I was in a meeting last quarter when someone mentioned, almost as an aside, that nonhuman traffic had crossed 50% of all internet activity. Nobody in the room reacted. That moment stuck with me—because the entire marketing function is built on the assumption that a human is on the other end. That assumption is gone.
AI bots are no longer solely a security problem. They are a business problem (and in some cases a blessing, which I will explain later). And most marketing organizations are not architected to deal with it.
Let's start with the cost. According to Imperva's 2025 Bad Bot Report, bad bots accounted for 37% of internet traffic. Statista estimated digital ad fraud costs would grow from $88 billion in 2023 to $172 billion by 2028. Bots are clicking on paid ads, generating fake impressions, and consuming content that was designed—and paid for—to reach humans. That's a structural failure in how we measure and protect digital investment.
The tools we've relied on to stop this aren't keeping up. CAPTCHAs and other human verification challenges were built for a different era. Modern AI-powered bots mimic human behavior well enough to bypass most of the defenses we put in place. Based on our data at Hydrolix, WAFs can miss more than half of bot traffic—an amount that should alarm every marketing and security leader in the room.
The problem is compounded by silos. Security teams, operations, and marketing all have different views on what constitutes a "good" bot versus a "bad" one. They use different tools, operate on different timelines, and often reach opposite conclusions about the same traffic. There's no common layer where these teams can look at the same data and make a unified decision. That's the real gap.
The consequences of getting it wrong cut both ways. Block too aggressively, and you eliminate bots that are actually driving value—search crawlers, contextual verification tools, AI indexers that determine whether your brand surfaces in LLM-generated answers. One company blocked legitimate global web crawlers and lost an estimated $6 million in business. They didn't show up where it mattered. Getting AI bot strategies wrong in either direction is expensive.
We're Entering an Agent-to-Agent Economy
The next moment of recent "wow" realization for me was when our product team approached and asked how marketing could adapt if they began shipping new capabilities daily. Their ai-accelerated development velocity was so effective we had to ask how we'd transform and accelerate every other part of the business around it with the same. And that's when I realized all parts of work and in fact all software interactions ahead would eventually transform into an AI to AI, and Agent to Agent economy.
The AI bot problem marketers are dealing with today is just the warm-up act.
Some of the world's largest e-commerce companies have already launched agent-to-agent marketplaces. No human in the middle. Transactions that used to take minutes now operate like API calls—sub-second, high-frequency, fully automated. When a human is browsing, it's acceptable for a page to load in a second or two. When an agent is making a purchasing decision, it expects an answer in milliseconds.
This has been seen before, what happened to financial markets? First, only humans traded everything. Then trading houses consolidated capital and made bigger more influential bets. Then they pioneered machine learning for deciding what to trade and when in near real time. Then AI started listening to earnings calls, inferring what to do the next day, and doing it. Now transactions per second are off the charts. That same curve is coming for e-commerce and the broader martech stack and in fact all software stacks—and it's arriving faster than most people expect.
The implication for marketing is direct: everything you know about tracking ROI, measuring ad performance, and optimizing digital spend has to move toward real-time. Hourly reporting cycles are already obsolete. In an agent-to-agent world, they're irrelevant.
What Marketers Need to Change — Now
I'll be honest—I don't think anyone has fully solved the two-audience content problem yet. But the marketers who are at least asking the question are in a different position than those who aren't.
Here's where I'd start.
Detection has to become behavioral. Next-generation agentic bots don't follow robot.txt. They don't announce themselves with a user agent string. They behave dynamically, making decisions based on current state and requesting new data sets in real time. Identifying them requires behavioral analytics—understanding what a bot does, not just what it looks like. The nuance and intelligence to detect these next-gen agents doesn't exist in most tools on the market today.
Content strategy has to serve two audiences. When a human comes to your site, they should find something compelling—brand-driven, emotionally resonant, built for people. When an AI comes to your site to index information or get its job done, it needs something different: structured, direct, immediately executable. Those are not the same content. Marketers who treat them as interchangeable will lose on both fronts. Optimizing for LLMs so your brand surfaces in AI-generated answers is not a future consideration—it's a current one.
Your data architecture has to be able to keep up. Most companies are stuck analyzing bot behavior in 30-day windows because they can't afford to store more data or run analytics fast enough against it. That's not a reporting limitation. That's a strategic blindspot. The volume spikes from agentic traffic are already happening. Traditional systems—the consolidated tech stacks that dominated the last five years of platformization—are not built for this. They will either slow down AI workflows or produce invoices that kill the business.
Enter the Real-Time Data Fabric
The answer isn't to throw out existing infrastructure. It's to build a real-time data fabric integrated into it—a layer that ingests the largest scale—think global CDN, WAF and edge data, retains it for long-term analysis, and serves insights fast enough to keep pace with automated ecosystems. A layer that can identify what AI needs, find it rapidly, deliver it, and track whether the exchange worked.
I keep coming back to what happened in financial markets—not because it's a perfect analogy, but because it's the closest thing we have to a preview. The shift from human traders to algorithmic systems to real-time AI didn't feel gradual from inside it. It felt fine, and then it felt sudden. The firms that were caught flat-footed didn't see it coming because they were measuring the wrong things. AI shifts didn't happen over decades—it happened in an inflection point, and the firms that adapted early captured disproportionate value. The ones that waited were playing catch-up permanently.
Marketing is on the same curve. The marketers who thrive in the agentic era will be the ones who accept the shift early, audit their bot and agentic strategy honestly, and stop optimizing for a human-first world that no longer exists.
Start by learning the tools. Claude, ChatGPT, and agentic platforms are not optional for the next generation of marketing leaders—they are the environment. Then pressure your vendors. Ask them directly: how does your tool interface with agentic systems and why couldn't I just build my own? If they can't answer, that's your answer.
The agentic marketplace is not a thought experiment. It is being built right now. I don't think most marketing organizations are ready for this. I wasn't fully ready when I started digging into it. But the window to get ahead of it is shorter than it looks—and the cost of waiting is a lot higher than the cost of asking hard questions now. Get coding!
