Chocolates, in general, have always been known as sweet treats that can help reduce the level of stress that a person is experiencing. However, in a recent study, it is revealed that a specific type of chocolate can also help reduce the chances of acquiring pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer starts when the cells present in the pancreas multiply up to a number that they make the whole gland grow out of mass. According to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, this particular type of cancer has been one of the deadliest varieties of the disease for the last 5 years, where it has been reported that at least 73 percent of the victims won't even make it past the first 12 months after diagnosis.

A team of researchers from Indiana University, Bloomington, conducted a study in order to find out what food components can help fend off pancreatic cancer. One of the things they discovered is that people who barely eat foods containing magnesium will have at least 24 percent higher chances of acquiring pancreatic cancer. While those who take foods that are rich in magnesium like dark chocolate have much lesser chance of developing the mentioned disease.

According to study co-author and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ka He, there are a lot of differences between pancreatic cancer and other types of cancers. One of these differences is that this particular variety has the lowest survival rate -- that's why it is important to be aware of the risks, warning signs and prevention associated with it. The researchers also added that additional factors such as age, gender or body mass index did not change the level of magnesium required in one's body in order to fight cancer cells.

However, the researchers also found out that taking vitamins with magnesium component can actually increase the risks of getting pancreatic cancer. That's why study leader, Daniel Dibaba, stated that even though the study showed that magnesium supplement can help fight cancer, natural options such as nuts, green and leafy vegetables, and dark chocolates are much more recommended to use.
