Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in today's times. A new study advocates gastric bypass surgery over the gastric sleeve and weight management to control diabetes in the long run.

According to Science News, 134 people with type 2 diabetes were under observation during the 5-year research. Researchers observed that while 11 out of 47 patients having gastric sleeve were not required to take insulin anymore, 14 out of 49 patients undergoing gastric bypass did not require insulin. The study also concluded that people with diabetes for less than 8 years are more prone to cure.

The gastric bypass surgery is a kind of bariatric surgery done to reduce the size of the stomach in order to shorten digestion time. The study bears evidence that bariatric surgery helps to decrease sugar level in patients with mild obesity and a body index of 27 to 34, affecting body's metabolism and gut microbes. After gastric bypass surgery, patients were found to live a much better life than those who opted for other remedies.

According to Science Daily, people with obesity are more vulnerable to diseases of the heart, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and arthritis. Bariatric surgery like gastric bypass surgery has been regarded as the most efficient and long-lasting way to curb obesity and reduce weight. Reportedly, the risk of death also reduces by 0.1 percent and other major complications also get reduced by about 4 percent due to bariatric surgeries like gastric bypass surgery.

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity is a common concern for 36 percent adults. Percentage of women having obesity is greater than men while older people also tend to be more prone to obesity than younger ones.

The study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on 15th February shows that almost 24 million Americans are severely obese and have a BMI of more than 35, which is quite alarming. This study about bariatric surgery like gastric bypass surgery comes as a boon for patients suffering from diabetes and other obesity-related diseases.
