Water is concrete's ultimate enemy. Although concrete withstands constant beatings from cars and trucks, water can break it down, pool on its surface and infiltrate the tiniest cracks. Add freezing and thawing cycles, and it's no wonder roads need frequent repairs.
Last September, a small crack that was found by two hunting guides in an isolated ranch near Ten Sleep in north central Wyoming now measures a width of 45 metres and a length of 650 metres.
