A man from Indianapolis recently explained in a post on Reddit over the weekend how he had hit a telephone pole after his car tire blew out while he was driving.

Newsweek reported that this Reddit user believes that his Apple Watch saved him from death after a car crash.

Based in Indianapolis, the man explained hitting the pole left him with his head on the steering wheel as smoke came out of the vehicle. Although a new safety feature on his watch meant that minus even moving, authorities were notified about the accident he encountered, and came for rescue.

The man who opted not to be identified said he was traveling a road he has known all his life, adding that it was a road it has driven on thousands upon thousands of times.

A Redditor recently explained how his Apple Watch’s Crash Detection feature saved him from death after a car crash.

The 'Crash Detection' Feature

While he was sitting barely conscious, the man felt the haptic feedback from his new Apple Watch S8. He said he knew the device was calling for help and that he could hear his watch say "a crash has occurred" and "help is on the way."

This Car Detection feature of Apple was announced only a few months back with the release of iOS 16 and watch OS 8 and is enabled by default on supported devices.

Essentially, this safety feature senses when the wearer has been in a severe impact incident and the iPhone or Apple Watch will automatically show a warning screen.

From here, the Apple Watch user can swipe the on-screen emergency call for the activation and emergency services or he can choose to cancel and turn it off.

Emergency Services Automatically Called

Should the user not take any action 10 seconds after, the watch will automatically call emergency services and then play a Siri message that will determine emergency services that have occurred and will communicate the exact site of the incident.

Because of the digital action taken by the watch, the driver was attended to quite fast by the emergency services.

The man was awoken by whom he assumed was the EMS, "rubbing their knuckles on my chest" to shake him awake.

The Redditor was left with three broken ribs, several cuts and scrapes, and an orbital fracture. Describing the result of the accident, he said he has certainly been better although he is alive and will soon be released from hospital admission; thus, there are certainly some victories to take home from this.

Life-Saving Action

This unidentified man was not the lone Apple user to compliment his watch for its possibly life-saving action.

Last year, 9to5Mac reported about a man who credited Apple Watch for saving his life through the Crash Detection app.

Then, early this year, a California man praised the technology for initiating a 911 call following a fall from an e-bike.

In a similar way, another individual commended Apple Watch last month for prompting him to visit the doctor for a check-up following its detection of an irregular heart rate.

Drawbacks

Some iPhone users, though, have complained that the Crash Detection software by Apple is quite easily triggered.

Earlier this month, as specified in a related Ary News report, an Ohio-based dispatch center shared around six calls with the Wall Street Journal from iPhone users who were on rides at an amusement park when the crash detection software got triggered.

However, despite the false alarms, the Reddit user could not commend the detection software enough following his crash.
