Medical experts recently created a mortality risk model that predicts life expectancy and end-of-life support for older adults. The model, in the form of a calculator, is developed to give an overview of how to improve care essentials for the community-dwelling elderly and to estimate the time span left on their lives.

The Risk Evaluation for Support Predictions for Elder-Life in the Community Tool, also known as RESPECT calculator, have the capability to predict death in just seconds of evaluation. The data on the calculator is based on the records of almost 500,000 community-dwelling adults that have a record of Resident Assessment Instrument for Home Care or RAI-HC since 2007 up to 2013, reports Fast Company.

The RESPECT calculator gives a better understanding and expectations to families about the situation of their loved ones, said the University of Ottawa, The Ottawa Hospital, and Bruyere Research Institute medical expert Amy Hsu, who is also.

RESPECT calculator could assist in the future plans of both the elderly community and their families. Hsu added that the life calculator could be beneficial to plan special vacations and upcoming holidays, offering the remaining time left for frail older adults.

The RESPECT program is not just a life expectancy calculator. It also serves as a survival guide for older adults, based on the end-of-life experiences recorded by the majority of the older population in Ontario.

Using the RESPECT calculator, Hsu and her colleagues identified a significant detail from the elderly population. According to the published study in the Candian Medical Associaton Journal entitled "Predicting death in home care users: derivation and validation of the Risk Evaluation for Support: Predictions for Elder-Life in the Community Tool (RESPECT)," higher mortality rate is expected to the group of people that have challenges to exhibit daily abilities. The group that is already failing to perform daily activities, including hygiene, locomotion, and difficulties in using the toilet, have a stronger chance of 6-month mortality compared to the risk of their own disease, EurekAlert reports.

The mortality risk model RESPECT is essential to know the next steps and build decisions with regards to this highly overlooked situation of the older population. Knowing the remaining time of a person can also assist them to be informed about the knowledge and treatments they should get, said The Ottawa Hospital physician expert and co-author of the study Peter Tanuseputro. He added that people have now the ability to know a curative goal or how to maximize the remaining life when their days tread closer each day to death.

The RESPECT elder-life calculator is designed through the contribution of community-dwelling patients and care partners. Since its pilot in Ontario, the RESPECT calculator can now be used by medical experts, home care professionals, and even the older adults themselves. The RESPECT is made available online at Project Big Life, supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
