Where does squalane come from?

Squalane is an organic compound that is obtained by the hydrogenation of squalene. This squalene is a natural component of the sebum of our skin, and was originally sourced from the livers of sharks. However, due to environmental concerns, and to protect the marine biodiversity, the firms of the sector innovated to create a plant-based squalane, which would be entirely based on natural components. This challenge was taken up by the Sophim company.

Sophim is a natural and organic cosmetic products manufacturer who puts the environment at the center of its priorities. To do so, the company based its production on one principal raw material: the olive. Indeed, the olive is a renewable source that enables the firm to work for a more sustainable future. On top of that, this product is known to be a great source of squalane. Through a distillation and hydrogenation process, Sophim extracts the squalene from the olive and turns it into squalane, more stable, which will be used in different cosmetic products.

How can squalane be used?

The main advantage of plant-based squalane is that its structure is very similar to the structure of the protective skin barrier. Therefore, its use is highly recommended in skincare products, such as moisturizers, for example. It can be included in products that are formulated to suit dry skins, sensitive skin but also mature skin. The adaptability of the product is due to its numerous benefits.

First of all, squalane is reputed for its emollient properties. It is an excellent moisturizer that helps the skin to fight against dehydration. Secondly, it helps to restore the lipid barrier of the skin. As we previously said, squalane and the protective skin barrier have similar structures, this product thus helps to prevent water loss. A more hydrated skin also means a more elastic skin. Squalane highly improves the elasticity of the skin that often reduces with ageing and the slowing down of the regeneration of the skin. Last but not least, it is an ideal pre-makeup base that protects and prepares the skin against the different products you may apply on it.

Squalane’s properties are well known for the skin of the face, but this substance can also be used in the formulation of other cosmetics such as hair care and body care.

What about Phytosqualan?

To better suit the needs of cosmetic industries, cosmetic ingredients supplier – Sophim created Phytosqualan.

Phytosqualan is a natural vegetable squalane sourced from olive that can be used as a high performing emollient in cosmetics. On top of restoring the lipidic barrier of the skin, it has a great compatibility with skin components and allows to develop extra soft textures. It guaranties smoothness and a non-greasy feel on the surface of the skin. Also, it has a high penetration rate, and spreads easily, what makes it a very interesting component to add to the formulation of your cosmetics.

The regenerating and soothing effect of Phytosqualan can be introduced in skin and body care, but also in sun care, in order to help the skin recovering from the exposition to the sun. It can also be used in makeup, as it favors pigments dispersion.

Natural, environmentally responsible and efficient, Sophim’s squalane has everything to improve the formulation of your cosmetics.
