Lotion containing cultured natural skin bacteria was proven effective in five patients suffering from the skin condition. The bacteria-rich formulation protects the skin from infections caused by destructive skin germs.

Being one of the largest organs being exposed every day, skin is the most susceptible to bacterial and fungal infection. According to Live Science, bacteria play a very important role in the immune defense as derived from the discovery of the newest lotion containing bacteria. The study was pioneered by Dr. Richard Gallo, chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of California, San Diego.

In order to initialize the study regarding the lotion, the researchers have evaluated volunteers suffering from eczema a skin infection that causes patients to be more susceptible to "Staphylococcus" infections. The researchers found that patients with persistent eczema are deficient with the friendly bacteria that kills "Staphylococcus" bacteria as compared with people who has healthy skin features.

As reported by WebMD, staph (short term for "staphylococcus") infection often begins with a little cut which gets infected with bacteria. These staph infections may occur from a simple boil to antibiotic -resistant infections and finally to flesh-eating infections. In the current study, the known good bacterial strains which were incorporated in the lotion also belong to the family of staph.

The study proves that the friendly strains of bacteria that were formulated into a lotion produces two natural antibiotic agents known as "antimicrobial peptides". In normal body physiology, these substances are also produced naturally but the bacteria present on the skin produces them more efficiently.

Furthermore, experiments using pig skin and mice were carried out to test the good bacterial strain. Surprisingly, the strain inhibited the growth of harmful staph strains including MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph aureus). Five patients were tested and found that staph has mostly caused their skin infections. The researchers then grew more of the good bacteria in the lab and incorporated it in the lotion.

The researchers instructed the five patients to apply their own personalized lotion to one arm and a regular moisturizer to the other as a control. After 24 hours, considering all five patients only the one arm with the microbe formulation has improved and in 2 patients, the staph-causing infections were entirely eradicated.
