Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness on the skin and has a bumpy texture. It is commonly seen on the face but can also be seen in other parts of the body, such as the neck, abdomen, and chest.

Anyone suffering from skin disease should immediately see a board-certified dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment. Patients may also help control their condition by preventing it from getting worse by identifying and avoiding the things that trigger rosacea to flare up.

Rosacea Cause and Symptoms

According to WebMD, doctors have not yet identified the exact cause of rosacea but there are a few things that may play a role in the development of the skin condition. This includes genetic factors, trouble in blood vessels in the skin caused by sun damage, and mites or tiny insects that could irritate the skin.

The most common symptoms of rosacea are the redness of the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead that may sometimes be mistaken as severe acne. But after a while, broken blood vessels become noticeable through the skin, which thickens and swell up that may cause eye problems, and pain.

Other symptoms may also include stinging and burning of the skin, patches of rough and dry skin, swollen bulb-shaped nose, larger pores, broken blood vessels in the eyelids, bumps on the eyelids, and problems in vision. These symptoms may come and go, and might even flare up for a few weeks and fade again before coming back. Make sure to get treated by an expert and take care of rosacea symptoms.

How to Prevent Flare-Ups

The American Academy of Dermatology Association has listed some tips to prevent flare-ups of rosacea. These include the following:

  • Protect Skin from Sunlight- rosacea-prone skin may experience flare-ups under the sun. Dermatologists recommend applying a gentle, broad-spectrum, and fragrance-free sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day.
  • Learn Stress Management- stress can cause rosacea to worsen so it is best to find an activist wherein it helps relieve stress, like meditation, tai chi, or joining a rosacea support group.
  • Prevent Overheating- Do not take hot warms or showers, instead only choose a warm setting. When feeling overheated, drape a wet cloth around the neck and sip a cold drink or keep cool with a fan.
  • Try Cold Drinks Instead of Hot Beverages- Studies reveal that heat from beverages causes rosacea to flare. So, it is advisable to drink iced coffee instead of the hot version.
  • Reduce Alcohol Intake- Red wine is the biggest culprit of rosacea flares when it comes to alcoholic beverages. Instead, drink white wine or do not drink alcohol at all.
  • Lessen Spicy Foods- Try a mild version instead of eating hot and spicy foods.
  • Select Skin and Hair Care Products Wisely- See a dermatologist and ask for a skincare plan for rosacea that will not trigger the skin condition. Also, only use rosacea-friendly makeup.

Rosacea Treatment

Leading Consultant Dermatologist, Dr. Ophelia Veraitch told Daily Express that there are several ways to treat rosacea. She emphasized following the tips on preventing rosacea flare-ups to avoid triggers. She added that lifestyle changes could significantly help in treating the condition.

More so, aerobic exercise can worsen the symptoms. She reminded rosacea patients to use a gentle cleanser and targeted serums to treat the underlying cause, although light and laser-based therapies could also help clear redness.
