Snakes are found almost anywhere on the planet. According to National Geographic, there are 3,000 species of snakes found everywhere except for Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland, and Greenland. They come in different colors and sizes that some look utterly bizarre, like the fury green snake found in a swamp in Thailand.

Almost all snakes have scales like reptiles, cold-blooded animals and regulate body temperature externally. These scales trap the moisture in arid climates and reduce friction. Although, there have been several snake species found that are mostly scaleless. Could the green fury snake be one of them?

A mystery fury green snake was found in Sakhon Nakhon province in Thailand on February 26, 2022. Newsflare reported that this bizarre 2 feet-long snake had a frilly body that resembles fur as it moves underwater.

A local named Tu, 49, first noticed the snake when it slowly moved in the dirty water near his house while he was walking. Amazed by the creature, he took home the snake and kept it in an earthen water jar before showing it to his equally-confused family members. They, too, were baffled by the dragon-like appearance of the animal.

His 30-year-old niece, Waraporn Panyasarn, told the news outlet that it was her first time to see such a snake. Thinking that it would be helpful to let people know about the snake, they decided to tell others to help them identify the fury green snake. She took a video of the snake and posted it online to ask experts what creature it was.

What Kind of Snake Was It?

The family decided to keep the snake and feed it with small fish while waiting for local authorities to identify it. Some locals suggest that the furry snake could be a puff-faced water snake that has been waiting for too long in the shallow and rocky crevices part of the swamp to catch its prey while staying still that moss had started growing on its back.

According to Ecology Asia, puff-faced water snakes are mildly venomous species of water snake. They inhabit freshwater bodies, such as ponds, swamps, and forest streams. This species also displays nocturnal habits and mainly feeds on small fish or frogs.

Young puff-faced water snakes are usually dark brown to black with hints of orange, red, or pale bands with black edging. Meanwhile, adults are typically plain brown or gray and have less distinctive banding. But it has a whitish belly, and its body scales are keeled.

They can easily be distinguished from other species with the patterns on top of their broad head. Different species of this snake can also be found in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
