Ireland's Food Standards Agency Issues Product Recall of Glensallagh Glazed & Grilled American Style Cajun Shaved Ham for Undeclared Gluten

Lidl buyers in Ireland have been warned about a popular ham product that may be harmful to certain people.

Specific batches of Lidl's Glensallagh Glazed and Grilled American Style Cajun Shaved Ham have been recalled by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

Gluten was found in four batches, although not stated on the label, making it "unsafe" for some customers.

Lidl Issues Recall for Popular Cooked Ham

The involved batches may be seen in the list below, as provided by AllergyUK.org.

Customers who are allergic to or intolerant of gluten-containing cereals should check their refrigerators for the concerned product.

"Batches of Glensallagh Glazed & Grilled American Style Cajun Shaved Ham are being recalled due to the presence of gluten, which is not declared on the label," FSAI announced in a statement: 

"This may make the affected batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of cereals containing gluten."

Symptoms of Wheat Allergy

Like many other types of food intolerance, wheat allergies and gluten allergies can vary greatly in intensity and sensitivity. Glensallagh ham would only be harmful to someone with a severe case of wheat allergy or celiac disease in this situation. After consuming wheat, someone with a wheat allergy is likely to have symptoms within minutes or hours.

Mayo Clinic said the symptoms are the following:

• Swelling;
• Stinging, or irritation in the throat;
• Mouth, or skin, including hives or rashes;
• Nasal congestion;
• Headaches;
• Breathing difficulties;
• Cramping;
• Nausea;
• Vomiting
• An allergic individual may also have anaphylaxis in severe circumstances.

Celiac disease, on the other hand, is an immune system response to gluten, a protein found in wheat. Diarrhea, bloating, gas, stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and constipation are some of the gastrointestinal symptoms it might induce. Anemia, bone density loss, skin rashes, mouth ulcers, headaches, weariness, and joint discomfort are all possible symptoms.

It can cause nervous system impairments in the long run, such as numbness or tingling in the feet or hands, cognitive impairment, and balance issues.

Other Food Recalls

Meanwhile, Centra is recalling King Prawn batches owing to mislabeling.

Due to an oversight, several packs of King Prawns were tagged with a considerably later use-by date than they should have been.

'Centra King Prawns (Cooked & Peeled)' is the name of this product, which comes in a 180g bag.

The label's use-by dates are 16/07/2022 and 22/07/2022, although they should be 16/06/2022 and 22/06/2022, respectively.

All impacted retailers have received point-of-sale recall letters, and consumers who return the goods will get a full refund.

The above batches of Centra King Prawns are being recalled, according to FSAI (per Irish Sun), because the use-by dates have been mislabeled.

The label's use-by dates are 16/07/2022 and 22/07/2022, although they should be 16/06/2022 and 22/06/2022, respectively.
