5 Best AI Innovations in 2023 From ChatGPT to Medical Imaging

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has contributed significantly to many innovations this year. Among its products are ChatGPT and advanced tools in the medical field. Here are some of them.

ChatGPT and other Generative AI

ChatGPT, which OpenAI released in November 2022, took the health industry by storm in 2023. Everything is impacted by the broad language model, including how doctors interact and maintain records, as well as how patients receive medical advice.

Dr. Harvey Castro, a Dallas, Texas-based board-certified emergency medicine physician and national speaker on AI in health care, said it "revolutionized healthcare communication." One study said the system offered evidence-based responses like an expert.

Regarding various tasks meant to lessen the burden of documentation and free up clinicians to concentrate on their primary responsibilities, ChatGPT remains the most well-known and frequently utilized generative AI technology among medical professionals.

Numerous studies at Johns Hopkins University are looking into how generative AI might be used to lessen the burnout that comes with electronic medical records for clinicians.

However, Castro noted that human monitoring is still essential to ensure that AI tools like ChatGPT are utilized as supplements rather than as a replacement for qualified medical judgment.

Retinal Images for Disease Detection

In September of this year, researchers from the University College London group unveiled their "groundbreaking" artificial intelligence model for retinal image-based illness diagnosis. The model, known as RETFound, offers a more effective method of disease diagnosis through a foundation model, representing a notable advancement in medical AI, per Dr. Tinglong Dai, professor of operations management and business analytics at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School in Baltimore, Maryland.

AI-Based Image Generation for Medical Imaging

AI-based image generation model DALL-E 3 by OpenAI takes text prompts as input and generates a new image. According to Castro, this has been instrumental in medical education for complex medical conditions and procedures.

Castro emphasized that DALL-E3 can produce precise medical graphics based on written descriptions. Additionally, Castro noted that improvements in MRI technology and other AI-driven medical imaging techniques have resulted in quicker scan times, better image quality, and lower radiation exposure, significantly increasing diagnostic accuracy.

AI to Accelerate Cancer Research

According to Andre Esteva, CEO and co-founder of ArteraAI, a precision medicine business based in California, cancer research is a "fertile ground for AI." They utilize AI to uncover patterns in data, customize treatment decisions, and forecast treatment outcomes. Artificial intelligence (AI) is accelerating clinical trials and creating new opportunities in the medical field.

AI Medical Devices

According to Dai of Johns Hopkins, AI-powered medical equipment is still quite popular. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had authorized 692 AI devices as of July 2023. The number represents a 33% increase from 2022.

"Approved devices now cover 19 specialties, although radiology remains the largest specialty, accounting for approximately three-quarters of approved devices," Dai said.

Another AI report also demonstrated the practical applications of these gadgets and their explosive expansion in the medical field.
