A couple has been depending on AI to cross their language borders in dating. Now, they are even engaged.
Couple Uses AI To Communicate
This couple went on a blind date, which was the idea of a mutual friend. Both of them were from the opposite side of the US-Mexico border. For months, the two had to use different AI tools to aid them in bridging the language gap between Spanish and English.
During their first date, LeRoy Romero and Brencda Ochoa made use of Google Translate for communication. They had a drink together and did not have the usual small talk during the first date because of the barriers in language.
After coming back to Arizona, Romero had the idea that the Captions app, which he uses for work, could help him with personal matters as well. On top of being able to make and edit videos, the app also had remarkable capabilities for lip-dubbing translation. More specifically, the powerful translation AI of the app can mimic the natural voices and lip movements of users when they translate videos into different languages.
While there are similar technologies that have been found to be worrisome in different contexts, this one has led to wonders for the relationship of both Romero and Ochoa.
The couple gets to see each other once a month when Romero makes the four-hour drive to see Ochoa. However, when they are apart, they make use of different AI translation apps for communication.
Being a tech-savvy guy, Romero also has some earbuds with a simultaneous translation feature that works two ways and that can help him understand what Ochoa is saying in real-time. However, he did not make use of these services when he called Ochoa's grandmother to ask for her blessing prior to proposing to Ochoa.
The two are now engaged and plan to get married over the summer. They have also been enhancing their actual language skills on their own.
AI-Assisted Dating: How Helpful Are These Technological Advancements?
