A new octa-core processor was unveiled by Samsung on Thursday. The new Exynos 9 Series 8895 combines a custom CPU with a gigabit LTE modem and a separate processing unit for security applications. It is not only super-fast but power efficient as well.

According to PC World, there are already speculations about whether the Exynos 9 has been designed into the new flagship Galaxy S8 smart phone that the company is expected to launch very soon. The Exynos 9 Series 8895 is already in mass production and Samsung expects the chip to be designed into smart phones, VR headsets, and automotive infotainment parts.

The Exynos 9 Series 8895 is the first from Samsung to use the 10-nanometer FinFET process technology that delivers up to 27 percent higher performance while consuming 40 percent less power than the previous 14 nm technology, Samsung said in a statement. The company also said that the octa-core processor combines four second-generation custom designed main CPU cores from Samsung with four ARM Cortex-A53 cores. It uses Samsung Coherent Interconnect (SCI) technology for cache coherency to deliver a heterogeneous system architecture that enables faster calculations for applications such as artificial intelligence and deep learning.

According to Digital Trends, Samsung has claimed that the Exynos 9 Series 8895 is the world's first mass-produced SoC to support gigabit downloads over LTE with help of carrier aggregation. In addition to the "impossible" download speeds, the multi-format codec in Exynos 9 Series 8895 enables playback and recording of 4K content at up to 120 frames per second. The Exynos 9 Series 8895 can power front and rear cameras at a maximum of 28MP each, and sports two image signal processors- one for high quality and another for power conservation.

Exynos 9 Series 8895 processor also features a dedicated vision processing unit for purposes like object recognition and motion detection. Besides, a security processing unit handles fingerprint and iris recognition for device security, as well as mobile payments.

Samsung says Exynos 9 Series 8895 is in production now, though no devices in which it will be launched has yet been revealed. The company has formerly launched Qualcomm Snapdragon- and Exynos- powered variants simultaneously. Samsung has said that more about Exynos 9 Series 8895 will be revealed at the Mobile World Congress next week.
