In India, 30-year-old Assam was admitted to the hospital after complaints of severe pain in his abdominal area. After a few examinations, a surgeon had to remove a charger that was two feet long from his bladder, which Assam inserted through his penis.

Dr. Walliul Islam, a surgeon from Guwahati, said that the man arrived at the hospital 'with severe abdomen pain and told us that he consumed a headphone cable by mistake.' They examined his stool and conducted an endoscopy as well but found nothing.

When we operated him, there was nothing in his gastrointestinal tract.' With Assam's intestine empty, they performed another X-Ray. The X-Ray revealed that the problem wasn't in Assam's bowels but in his bladder. Dr. Islam said the lab results showed a two-foot-long charging cable coiled up inside.

Dr. Islam originally prescribed Assam a course of laxatives, causing the patient to pass several stools, but the abdominal pain continued and the stool appeared normal. A small incision to the bladder allowed the doctor to see the lead and pull out the entire cable. 'He told us that he had consumed headphones through the mouth, but in fact, he had inserted the mobile charger cable through his penis.'

Sexual Gratification

The surgeon explained that Assam had a habit of inserting various objects in his body through his urethra for sexual pleasure. 'It's a type of masturbation called urethral sounding, which is the insertion of an object or liquid into the urethra.'

Assam came to us five days after he inserted the cable. He repeatedly told us he consumed it through his mouth and we never imagined an adult would lie about such a thing," Islam said.

Conducting surgeries for 25 years, 'this is the first time such a case happened on the operation table,' Dr. Islam said. 'I have read that people used to get sexual gratification by inserting instruments through the penis. This is one such case, and the psychiatrist can help him beyond this point,' Dr. Islam.

Men frequently indulging in urethral sounding is more common than people think, 'but this person went to an extreme and hence the cable reached his urinary bladder,' continued Islam, saying that this is a rare instance. If only Assam had been honest in the beginning, they would have been able to help him more efficiently.

Recreational Urethral Sounding

In a study by Benjamin Breyer and Alan Shindel, both working at the Department of Urology in two California universities conducted a study explaining the high-risk sexual behavior and sexually transmitted infections associated with recreational urethral sounding.

Out of about 2,000 surveyed men, 10% had a history of recreation urethral sounding. The 228 men had increased odds of developing sexually transmitted infections (STI) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) from high-risk behavior and multiple sexual partners, including various strangers.

With erotic gratification as the most common reason for such behavior, it is also linked to several psychological illnesses. Depression was a prevalent trait, as well as drug abuse. They concluded that to help with a patient's well-being, education on safer sex practices may have a positive influence.
