Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, has reiterated his desire to travel to Mars, claiming that it is one of the few ways humanity can survive.

Mr. Musk mentioned the Great Filter, saying that we must defeat it before we perish. The Fermi Paradox includes the Great Filter, explaining why we have yet to meet another civilization in the universe.

What Is The Great Filter?

Astronomy.com said Enrico Fermi, the world's first nuclear reactor inventor, proposed a paradox in 1950. He claimed that due to the universe's age and size, there must be a civilization far more advanced than ours, which begs the question, "Why is it just us?"

Many scientists believe that if a civilization exceeds a particular scale, it will inevitably kill itself by killing the world, either by sophisticated weaponry or natural catastrophe.

Being multi-planetary is one way to overcome the filtering of life in the universe.

Musk has long held the view that mankind is destined to colonize far-flung locations such as Mars. The billionaire has spoken publicly about his dreams for a world on Mars. Science Times previously reported that he wanted to include everything from glass domes to terraforming the entire earth.

Elon Musk Says Becoming 'Multiplanetary' Is One of the Greatest Filters

Elon Musk is leading the way in the race to reach the solar system, which he believes will guarantee humanity's position in the cosmos in the future.

"Becoming multiplanetary is one of the greatest filters. Only now, 4.5 billion years after Earth formed, is it possible. How long this window to reach Mars remains open is uncertain. Perhaps a long time, perhaps not. In case it is the latter, we should act now," Musk said on his official Twitter account, Saturday.

According to SpaceX's CEO, Elon Musk, the Starship will reach Mars in the 2020s.

He said on his tweet that SpaceX will be landing Starships on Mars before 2030, as Science Times previously reported.

Musk, however, noted that making Mars Base Alpha self-sustaining is a real challenge."

Mars Base Alpha is the code word for the Red Planet's first human settlement.

On the other hand, Musk said that the first people to reach the destination will have to make the supreme sacrifice.

Previously, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said heading to Mars is "not the fundamental issue."

He explained that establishing a foundation or constructing a self-sustaining city on Mars would serve as the main problem.

Musk said they would build a propellant factory and an initial Mars base dubbed Mars Base Alpha. Then they'll work to make the place self-sustaining.

He also emphasized that this is a complex, risky, and challenging task that can not be undertaken lightly.

"Good chance you'll die, it's going to be tough going, but it will be pretty glorious if it works out," Elon Musk said in a Science Times report.
