There are many theories about what will happen if Earth stopped spinning. To get substantial clues regarding the phenomenon, experts traced back the history of our planet's rotation.

Earth has been spinning from the heart of the solar system since its formation over 4.5 billion years ago. Before it began its rotation, our planet materialized from rubble due to the effect of a huge burst of matter. The rubbles were combined to form an orb we now call a planet. During its early planetary activities, Earth circled the sun while rotating in its place.

Earth circled perpetually around our parent star, similar to when a tub full of water was unplugged to drain. Earth's revolution and rotation have not stopped and are interrupted by any other factors throughout its history.

In every 23 hours and 56 minutes, Earth regularly spins at a steady phase. As it rotates, our planet is also moving gradually around the sun. This orbit is completed once every year, but with the remaining time, Earth needs to turn around just a little bit more to face the sun again. Once accomplished, the 24-hour time will be completed in a day.

Earth spins continuously because there are no external factors preventing it from doing so. Compared to our planet, some objects we interact with do end after spinning for a limited time due to collective factors at play that slows them down, including friction and gravity.

On the vast and empty space, Earth is free to move. The vacuum-based conditions outside the cosmos do not present any aspects that could influence the effortless spin of our planet. But according to a Space report, experts believe that there is one component that could actually stop Earth from its unending spin - the moon.

The regions of the Earth that are away from facing the moon and opposite are theorized to have an imbalance due to the reaction of gravity. The effect of this gravitational imperfection is evident on the tides from oceans.

The bulge from the tide levels manifests around the planet like a wave. When the massive volume of oceanic waters pushes against the spin of Earth, it can cause the planet to spin slower than intended. The activity also adds one second per day on Earth every 50,000 years.

What Will Happen If Earth Stops on Spinning?

If ever the Earth stops spinning, people won't be thrown off to space. The gravity will maintain the objects on the planet's surface in place. However, significant changes will occur.

If Earth continues to revolve around the sun without spinning in its own orbit, one 'day' and 'night' on Earth will each expand into half a year. Extremities in temperatures between warmness during the day and coldness during the night will be experienced. Warm air could meddle with colder places and polar uncontrollably, which does not happen on a spinning Earth due to its deflection. Huge swirls of wind could also manifest due to the combination of the eastward, westward, and polar winds.

The magnetic field could also halt in giving a light show on the sky called auroras, and may stop protecting us from deadly cosmic particles such as radiations. It could also confuse species that heavily rely on the magnetic field during travel. And although the stars would not disappear in the skies, the constellations during the night will be the same for half a year.
