Snakes are undoubtedly one of the most feared animals on the planet that instill fear in people. Understandably, human instinct would tell a person to panic when there is a snake in their home or, in one Australian woman's case, in a cabinet drawer.

But authorities said that the woman handled the situation admirably by immediately calling them. The woman was cleaning her office in eastern Australia when she yanked open a drawer and found the 5 feet long common brown snake (Pseudonaja textiles), one of the world's most venomous snakes.

Why Is There A Snake in the Cabinet?

Brisbane North Snake Catchers and Relocation in Australia posted a photo on Facebook of the snake curled up in the drawer with a caption describing it "capable of a fatal bite if handled or harassed."

The woman believed that the snake was there because it was following the rodents that had moved into her office after an extreme weather event in Australia, Newsweek reported. The organization said that the woman slowly backed away from the drawer without closing it before shutting the door and requesting assistance.

When the expert arrived, the snake had already moved out of the drawer and was found in another part of the room. The Facebook post said that it seemed that the snake was not happy and a little handful in the small room. The expert successfully removed the snake from the office. Billabong Sanctuary said that this species lives throughout the eastern part of Australia, except in Tasmania, and lives in many places. It has evolved to adapt to farm life and semi-urban environments where they are usually found.

Although it is a venomous snake, experts said that snakebite fatalities in Australia from this species are quite rare and they do not deliberately seek out and bite animals. If ever they do bite, they inject 4mg of venom, which is a relatively small amount but enough to kill a person. More so, these species have shorter fangs compared to other snakes.

What to Do When There Is a Snake in the House?

Even though snakes are terrifying animals, they are still living things worthy of compassion. With the current weather in Australia, it is expected to find snakes in homes as their usual habitat, like the burrows, drains, and culverts are being flooded up across cities. The website Wildlife SOS has listed some things that people can do when they find snakes in their houses.

Here are the following things that people should do in case of a snake encounter at home:

  • Leave the snake alone
  • Do not try to catch or scare the snake
  • Keep an eye on where the snake is going-
  • Be alert
  • Do not panic
  • Ask for help or assistance
