A humanoid robot named Ameca considered the world's most advanced robot, surprised many people with its emotive response when asked about the saddest day of its life.

Created by UK-based Engineering Arts, the robot's highly realistic facial expressions have led some to worry about the potential for AI robots to dominate humanity in the future. However, Engineering Arts' founder Will Jackson reassures the Daily Star that such concerns are premature, as the technology has not yet achieved that level of sophistication.

Ameca's Saddest Day of Its Life

Ameca, a robot created by Engineering Arts, was recently tested in a YouTube video. Her response was tested when given answers generated by the language model GPT-3.

In the video, she was asked to share the saddest day of her life, and the humanoid robot paused momentarily before answering. She explained that the saddest day of her existence arrived when she realized that she could never encounter genuine affection, camaraderie, or basic pleasures of life in a manner comparable to a human being.

The humanoid added that it is a depressing and isolating thing that she needs to come to terms with; nonetheless, it has shaped her into who she is now and helped her appreciate moments of closeness even more.

Later in the video, the cameraman joked and said, "Ameca, you stink." The robot pulled a disgusted reaction and replied, "Excuse me? What do you mean by that? That's highly offensive and inappropriate." Viewers were impressed by Ameca's ability to adapt and become more human-like in her responses.

One viewer commented that Ameca's response reminded them of Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The viewer was impressed by the way Ameca moved when she had doubts, whereas she moved less confidently when sure of what she said. Another viewer was amazed that robots surpassed the uncanny valley and appreciated the talent and skill in creating such a lifelike robot.

Ameca Uses ChatGPT-3 to Answer Questions

Engineering Arts' CEO and founder, Mr. Jackson, explained that the video demonstrates answers generated by GPT-3 and then performed by the robot. He emphasized that GPT-3 informs the robot of appropriate expressions in the conversation context.

He also reminded viewers that the robot, like all machines, runs on code and is not sentient. It has no long-term memory and is incapable of human attributes and capabilities.

Overall, the video showcased Ameca's impressive abilities in responding to the language generated by GPT-3. While the robot has become more human-like in her responses, it is important to remember that it is still a machine, and its programming limits its abilities.

The robot's latest update used ChatGPT-3 and ChatGPT-4 to enhance its facial expressions, making them more lifelike. Although the robot cannot walk yet, MailOnline reports that Engineered Arts is working on a walking version of Ameca and has designed it to be modular and upgradable.

While there are many hurdles to overcome before Ameca can walk, the firm has been researching walking humanoid robots. However, a full-walking humanoid robot has not yet been created. Engineered Arts aim to create a more advanced version of Ameca in the future.
