Scientists recently pitted an artificial intelligence driver versus human gamers during a PlayStation driving game called Gran Turismo. Such a driver topped all the human gamers.

As specified in an NPR report, host Adrian Florido said what people heard at the game event is not real life. Instead, he added, "it is the sound of the said PlayStation racing game.

Another host, Ari Shapiro, explained that in this "play-by-play," some of the tom human gamers of the world are facing off against cars driven by an AI agent called Gran Turismo Sophy.

On the other hand, Sophy Rouge, the red car, is seen pulling ahead. As a result, the checkered flag has been waved, indicating its victory.

Artificial Intelligence Over Humans

According to Florido, computers have already won over humans at Jeopardy, chess, Go, and poker. Now machines have dominated humans once again in video game car racing. The AI, even more, impressive taught itself to drive.

Meanwhile, Peter Wurman, Sony AI America director, said it does not know what any controls do. And through trial and error, it's learning that the accelerator is making it go forward and the steering wheel is turning left and right. He described the feat in the Nature journal.

He also said it takes roughly an hour for the agent to learn how to drive around a track. More so, it takes approximately four hours to become about as good as a human driver's average.

It takes from 24 to 48 hours to be as good as the top one percent playing the game published by Sony. On the other hand, Shapiro said here one can see "where this is going."

Developing Engaging Challengers for 'Mere Mortals'

Mechanical engineering Chris Gerdes at Stanford said it turns out that Sophy is performing things that racecar drivers would regard as very intelligent.

Gerdes, who was not part of the study, is a racing fan saying the work could have real-world insinuations. He said it is not as if one can take the results of this paper to say he will try it on a self-driving vehicle the next day.

He does think, though, it is an eye-opener for those who develop an autonomous vehicle to sit back and say probably there is a need to keep an open mind on the extent probabilities with AI.

Meanwhile, the team of Wurman is working with the developers of the game to develop more engaging virtual challengers for the so-called "mere mortals."

Gran Turismo Game

Gran Turismo is a series of racing simulation video games developed by Polyphony Digital. The GT games, developed by PlayStation systems, are intended to mimic the appearance and performance of a large selection of vehicles, mostly licensed reproductions of real-world vehicles.

Since the franchise's debut in the late 1990s, more than 80 million units have been sold globally for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation Portable making it the highest-selling video game franchise under the brand PlayStation.
