The types of material permitted in the virtual worlds that users build for Horizon Worlds, Meta's platform that enables individuals to create VR spaces for shared experiences, are being expanded. The firm has revised its rules to permit creators to incorporate "mature" content that was previously outright forbidden and introduced an 18 and above classification for user-created environments. Experts warn that exposure to adult material may harm children's minds.

According to UploadVR, creators who have published worlds have gotten an email informing them that if they don't manually label their world as an adult or safe for all audiences, it would be automatically limited to those who are 18 and older.

Extreme Tech said Horizon Worlds, formerly Facebook Horizon, has been "flawless" up to this point. Executives from Meta have already discussed the significance of policing this new online environment, and new difficulties are already appearing. For instance, Meta had to include a "personal boundary" since some players were approaching other players' avatars and misbehaving.

You can view Meta's Adult Worlds Policy for Horizon here. Examples of content that the firm will let in the mature social spaces in Horizon Worlds and content that is "not allowed even with an 18+ tag," are provided below.

MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 28: Facebook debuts its new company brand, Meta, at their headquarters on October 28, 2021 in Menlo Park, California. Meta will focus on ushering in a future of the metaverse and beyond.

Metaverse to Add 'Mature' Content For Its VR: Scope Explained

In the metaverse, what does the word "mature" mean? Although Facebook doesn't go into much depth, there are a few key points to aid developers. Meta currently states that "near" nudity and "suggestive positions" are acceptable forms of sexual material. It appears that VR teabagging is once again an option. However, Meta continues to be unwilling to let VR porn in Horizon Worlds.

The Verge mentioned that adding "sexually suggestive" material, such as "near nudity, depictions of people in implied or suggestive positions, or an environment focused on overly suggestive activities," is allowed if users identify their word as an adult. However, the users are not allowed to engage in outright pornography. This still includes "nudity, depictions of people in explicit positions, or content or worlds that are sexually provocative or implied."

The same holds true for both violence and controlled drugs. However, you cannot market "illegal drugs or abuse of prescription drugs" in mature environments. Real-life violence cannot be depicted, even though "intense or excessively violent fictional content" with blood and gore "that could shock or disgust users" is permitted.

Nevertheless, Meta takes a stand against representations of illicit substances or drug misuse. Therefore, mentioning "cannabis" as permitted yet remains tricky since that is still illegal in half of the US, Extreme Tech pointed out.

The policy updates follow Meta's recent expansion of parental controls.

How Adult Content Could Affect Young Person's Mind

Due to several enabling factors, such as increased usage and access to the internet, increased device processing power, better Wi-Fi, better data roaming, and inevitably increased production and distribution of content on the internet, access to online pornography and sexual content has grown in both quantity and ease.

If young children are exposed to adult content, it can have a range of harmful effects on them. Some of the most typical are listed below, as shared by Together AI:

Objectification

Women are frequently objectified in media, entertainment, and other adult content. It's frequently shocking how sex education is presented and addressed. Women are frequently represented as little more than sexual objects, and many advertisements and television programs sexually and emotionally prey on women. A teen may come to see this conduct as normal as a result of this objectification.

Early-onset addiction to pornography can influence viewers to go against the norms of conventional intimate relationships. In adult content, the male character is frequently shown to be from a higher social class than the female character.

Internet Addiction Disorder

A young person's psyche may be impacted by excessive internet use for adult content. This would result in problems and disorders like low self-esteem, poor sleeping patterns, and suicidal thoughts. A child's brain wiring may be altered by frequent exposure to violent or sexually explicit information online, leading them to become obsessed with any sexual stimulation they encounter and addiction to accessing it.

Encourages Violence

Adult content, action movies, and other violent adult entertainment can greatly affect how young children experience the world. According to certain research, exposure to violent media at a young age might result in aggressive conduct. This could involve acting out later in life in a sexually and physically destructive way against someone, bullying, hitting or fighting another child, etc.
