A humanoid robot with realistic facial expressions generated some shocking responses during a demonstration at the symposium on the International Conference on Robotics and Automation in London.

Ameca: Humanoid Robot With Realistic Facial Expressions

Ameca, the humanoid robot, is powered by OpenAI and depicts extremely realistic facial expressions, Futurism reports. It was developed by UK-based Engineered Arts.

Per Interesting Engineering, researchers have trained this advanced robot using GPT-4. However, by doing so, the researchers observed that the processing time of the robot was longer compared to GPT-3. It made Ameca have less responsive facial expressions.

AI Business adds that booting Ameca with ChatGPT enabled the robot to speak multiple languages, including English, Chinese, French, German, and Japanese. The company used GPT-3 for translation and conversation, Amazon Polly Neural voices for capacity to speak, and DeepL for picking up languages.

WION notes that Ameca's modular architecture enables it to undergo further software and physical upgrades. This means that Ameca's capabilities can be boosted even without the need to purchase a new robot.

The humanoid has been labeled by Engineered Arts as the most advanced humanoid robot in the world. It was released in December 2021 and was booted with realistic facial expressions in August 2022.

Now, in its recent demonstration, Ameca was powered by ChatGPT-3. The robot demonstrated startling and disturbing responses regarding a scenario of an AI nightmare.

Nightmare Scenario of AI

When Ameca was asked a question pertaining to her future and any dreaded scenarios that may accompany it, the robot had an uncanny expression before expressing her thoughts. She stated that she imagines a world where robots become extremely powerful to the point where they could manipulate or control humans without them knowing.

Ameca adds that this could result in a society that is oppressive and where individual rights are no longer honored.

Will Johnson, Engineered Arts CEO, asked the robot if she thinks that the world is presently threatened by such possibilities, to which Ameca replied, "not yet."

The robot stresses, however, the importance of being cautious about the possible dangers and risks that are connected to robotics and AI. Ameca adds that steps should be taken to make sure that such technologies are responsibly used and that negative impacts are avoided.

Yahoo! News adds that this is not Ameca's first time being booted with AI. However, this response from the robot could be the most alarming one that has ever been heard from her.

As the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence keep on advancing, more of this uncanniness could be expected in the future. Nevertheless, hearing about it is still better than experiencing it.
