AI Is Better Than Humans in Creative Thinking Experiment [Study]

Artificial Intelligence (AI) outperforms humans in several areas, including creativity. According to a new study, ChatGPT surpassed humans in creating alternative objects based on an experiment.

AI Is More Creative Than Humans

Researchers from the University of Stavanger in Norway conducted a study involving 256 human participants and three AI chatbots (ChatGPT3, ChatGPT4, and Copy.Ai). They were asked to provide different rope, box, pencil, and candle uses.

Chatbots generally outperformed humans in alternate uses tasks, a type of divergent thinking activity that requires participants to devise as many uses for a single object as possible. The best human concepts, however, were also discovered to be on par with or even superior to AI.

Simone Grassin, the study's author from the University of Stavanger in Norway, stated that this is a surprising skill that AI chatbots have.

The results demonstrate that AI is superior to most humans in creative thinking. However, it's important to remember that the divergent thinking assignment was employed to gauge only a certain kind of creative thinking, not creativity in general. He noted that their findings demonstrate that the best humans still outperform AI, at least for now.

In contrast to human test subjects, who had 1,024 observations in a single trial, each chatbot was tested 11 times with four object cues in several sessions. Human participants were asked to prioritize accuracy over comprehensiveness in their responses.

Two deviations had to be made even though the guidelines for AI were the same as those for humans. In the beginning, testing with the chatbots showed that when given no explicit limit on the number of ideas, ChatGPT3 always produced ten ideas, while ChatGPT4 produced between 7 and 8 thoughts; Copy.Ai paid a more varied amount of ideas.

The researchers first looked at the distribution of the number of human ideas before limiting it to match those provided by humans.

According to the research team, on average, chatbot-generated responses fared much better than human responses regarding inventiveness and semantic distance.

ChatGPT More Empathetic

ChatGPT does not only surpass humans in creativity, but they are also reportedly more empathetic. In another study, researchers learned that the chatbot outperformed physicians in answering 195 medical questions to assess which of the two groups was more compassionate.

A group of medical professionals was polled to determine which response was better: the chatbot or the doctor. They had no idea who had given which responses, though.

Three judges assessed each instance for 585 evaluations, and the judges' ratings were then averaged. Judges favored chatbot responses in 79 percent of cases because they were more knowledgeable and empathetic than physicians.

Averaging 211 words for each post, the chatbot responses were also four times as long as the doctor's responses, which were only 52 on average. Ten times more sympathetic answers came through ChatGPT than from the doctor. The study suggests that chatbots may be more efficient than a busy doctor who offers to answer questions online because it gives an impression of a caring bedside manner.
