Venu Gopal Avula is an Enterprise Architect in SAP, Cloud, and AI technologies and has been working on the digital transformation of organizations using technology. Born and brought up in the historic town of Kadapa, a district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, Venu is now an Enterprise Data Architect in the United States of America, working on the use cases of data in organizations. Through his research and work, he is changing the way we look at Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and is on a mission to transform them into intelligent systems that can enable decision-making and help organizations plan ahead.
From Kadapa to the World Stage
I come from a beautiful city named Kadapa in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. I did my B. Tech in Engineering from Sri Venkateswara Engineering College, which is part of the Sri Venkateswara University in the divine city of Tirupati. Other than being a great place, Tirupati has lots of beautiful temples. It is also considered one of the best engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh, and I feel fortunate to have very good faculty and facilities to learn and sharpen my analytical and problem-solving skills.
He began his career as a Software Developer at IBM in the year 2005. He has vast experience in designing scalable architectures and reliable systems, processes, and procedures in his first innings of work. He has held various leadership positions such as Tech Lead, Architect, Associate Manager, and Technical Manager. He has vast experience in Healthcare, Banking and Financial Services, Oil and Gas, Telecom, and Manufacturing domains.
Mr. Bhargava has worked for a number of blue-chip global companies, including Philips Healthcare, Panasonic North America, Hewlett-Packard, Accenture, BHP Billiton, AT&T, Marathon Petroleum, and Deloitte Consulting Services. As an IT consultant, he has been involved in numerous technology transformation projects across a wide range of industry domains, leveraging his skills and expertise gained from years of experience in Enterprise IT, SAP modules, cloud infrastructure, and a deep domain knowledge of applying AI & advanced analytics. Currently, he is the President of Zillion Technologies, Virginia, USA.
Architecting Intelligent Enterprise Systems
Venu is responsible for the modernization of the Enterprise Data Ecosystem at Zillion Technologies. He works on highly scalable data architecture to move the SAP data to cloud platforms like Snowflake and AWS. Venu works on both real-time and batch processing, and he uses Apache Kafka and Snowpipe to achieve those use cases.
All data is organized into three data zones—Raw, Cleansed, and Curated—with embedded data governance, data lineage, and best practices for analytics. Venu's Data Mesh approach enables business domains to be data producers and owners of their data products, while the data is centrally managed. With this hybrid approach of Data Mesh, organizations can achieve business agility, data governance, and operational efficiency, thereby deriving meaningful business insights from their ERP data.
Key design principles include:
- Real-time and batch ingestion of enterprise data
- Zoned architecture for governance and traceability
- Integration of machine learning for predictive analytics
- Data mesh alignment for decentralized domain ownership
- Strong cloud-native security and compliance measures
A good architecture has to meet two requirements: technological soundness and architectural relevance to the business. We strongly agree with the notion that "technology should support the business and not the opposite," which is a guiding principle for our research and consulting work.
The Book That Bridges Theory and Practice
Venu is the author of Intelligent ERP Analytics: Machine Learning Applications for Enhanced Business Intelligence. This book is not at all about technology or ERP. It's more about planning and a roadmap to transform traditional ERP into intelligent systems. The book is about a business approach and a guide to plan and achieve digital transformation and gain a competitive business advantage.
Through this work, Avula demonstrates the integration of machine learning into an ERP system and its potential application in enterprises for the following:
- Anticipate financial risks and manage liquidity proactively
- Predict supply chain disruptions to minimize operational impact
- Enhance manufacturing processes through predictive quality control
- Deliver personalized customer experiences informed by behavioral insights
- Drive operational resilience and competitive advantage
The ERP Implementation Handbook is based on the global practice work that Avula has done in respect to many global ERP implementations. This handbook is a must-read for technologists, business leaders, and policymakers interested in leveraging technology to use data in a structured manner and gain tangible business benefits from technology projects.
Landmark Achievements in Enterprise Transformation
Working as a Data Architect & Technical Lead for a $30B oil and gas corporation, he successfully implemented the SAP S/4HANA 1610 at the client's premises. He was the key data architect behind the design of an enterprise-level HANA data warehouse having financial, commercial, and operational data for multi-divisions of the corporation. The task was accomplished with excellent quality within the given time frame.
I led the OneSAP transformation effort to consolidate six legacy SAP systems into a single instance. Involved in cross-functional groups in the US and Singapore to perform data cleansing and move large amounts of data into the new system, as well as standardize business processes and implement new governance controls, while having no downtime for the system.
He learned a number of key lessons that would later influence his approach to building enterprise systems. He learned that technology leadership is closely linked to business, and that all of the facets of business have to be considered when building large-scale technology applications. He learned the importance of careful, detailed design and implementation.
Intelligent ERP Analytics in Action
Venu Gopal Avula's extensive experience of ERP systems is an excellent example of how these systems can be developed from a simple accounting application to being highly proactive, predictive, and strategic, enabling organizations to gain competitive advantage. Using machine learning at the point of transaction within the ERP workflows can provide significant benefits to an organization. For instance, it will prevent the occurrence of liquidity risks, anticipate and manage supply chain risks, and enable customer services to be improved through the use of data to make it more relevant and engaging.
This approach turns an ERP system into an enterprise-wide, real-time decision support system that enables the business to shift from a purely reactive to a proactive level of business operation and to move from a focus on problem-solving to a focus on strategy.
"FOEI (Future of Enterprise Intelligence) is about predicting the outcome of actions and enabling such actions." — Venu Gopal Avula
A Balanced Life and Visionary Leadership
Outside of the boardroom, Venu enjoys traveling, mentoring students, and learning new things. He is a keen trekker, hiker, and nature lover and enjoys traveling to off-the-beaten-track places, which broadens his horizons and enables him to think differently when approaching problems and innovating. Venu is a keen mentor to young technologists and has a strong interest in the ethics of AI and responsible innovation.
My view is that the three elements that will have a lasting impact on individuals are: lifelong learning, being curious, and being able to absorb and recover from shock and failures. Given this perspective, I assist businesses to thrive in a technology-driven world where digital is not just an enabler but a clear differentiator.
